Licking Park District
The Licking Park District  has made a concerted effort to acquire and preserve representatives of Licking County's cultural and natural heritage. They currently manage approximately 1400 acres of green space in LickingCounty and offer many recreational opportunities for area residents.  The Licking Park District offers several volunteer internship positions as Living History Interpreter, Historian, Mounted Trail Patrol, and Natural Resources Assistant.


The Dawes Arboretum
Located in northern Ohio, The Dawes Arboretum includes 1,149 acres of plant collections and natural areas that offer unique educational experiences in any season. (Two particular paid openings have been available in recent years). The Fish and Wildlife Management Position duties include non-native plant control, deer management, rotational mowing, conducting wildlife surveys, pond management and assisting with educational programs as needed. The Wilds
As a 9200-acre, non-profit, conservation facility, the Wilds houses a wide variety of animals and provides schools and other groups with hands-on learning opportunities in wildlife and natural research conservation. In years past, positions open to junior and senior undergraduate students as naturalist-counselors were open during the summer starting in mid-April.  In addition, the Wilds provides internship programs in all its major areas of conservation work.  See their web page for more information.



Glen Helen Ecology Institute
The Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center (OEC) is a residential, outdoor education center serving over 3,000 elementary aged students annually. The OEC is part of the Glen Helen Institute and is situated in the Glen Helen Nature Preserve--a private, 1,000 acre preserve owned and operated by Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In recent years they held positions for naturalist interns as well as summer employment for EcoCamps. A minimum of two years of college was required with the opportunity of earning 10-12 college credit. Free room and board was provided. Interns planned and led activity sessions, large group presentations, and night tours.


Breaking Free Therapeutic Riding Center:  Breaking Free offers a number of programs designed to provide therapeutic benefits to individuals facing a wide array of health challenges.   They have been in operation since 2008 and easily accessible from the Muskingum University campus.  Breaking Free Therapeutic Center


Muskingum County Animal Shelter Society:   The Animal Shelter Society works to:

 *     Promote safe animal care and ownership
 *     Promote spay and neuter services
 *     Provide public education aimed at reducing animal cruelty

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo offers a variety of internship positions. Some are available in animal care, education, and marketing which can be paid or unpaid. There are also ample opportunities for scientific research projects through the zoo. Applications and resumes are accepted only when a position vacancies exist. Wildlife Haven
Wildlife Haven is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to promoting positive attitudes and behaviors towards wildlife and also to fostering awareness, appreciation and interest in Ohio's wildlife through rehabilitation, education and stewardship. It's main focus is on the care of injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife, most of which are in trouble due to manmade causes. Educational programs are presented to area school, church and civic groups and, during the fall and winter months. Volunteers care and educate animals, keep the grounds clean, and assist in administrative jobs. It is a demanding service, and requires the development of a number of skills, but it will provide excellent experience working with animals. Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of four hours a week and positions are available year round.



Animal Care Internship - Idle-Hour Ranch (Troy Ohio):

This program is designed to offer interns the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge, basic skills, and hands-­‐on experience working with an animal sanctuary and agri-tainment based facility. Particularly useful for students planning to apply to vet school or looking to pursue a career in animal husbandry, conservation, or the animal care field.

Responsibilities:

• Assist in the maintenance, cleaning, and overall improvement of the animal holding areas, exhibits, pools and ponds, exhibit buildings, and grounds associated with exhibits including roads and paths within the perimeter fence of the animal areas. Service may also be required on exhibits and with animals during offsite events.

• Assist in the preparation of animal diets.

• Assist in the watering and feeding of animals.

• Assist in providing enrichment for the animals.

• Conduct visual, & when appropriate, physical, inspections of animals & exhibits.

• Assist IHR staff in various areas while going about their daily routines.

• Assist farriers and veterinarians  when needed, as well as work with animal care staff as they administer treatments and rehab to the animals as necessary.

• When  appropriate,be responsive to visitor inquiries.

Environmental Protection Agency of Ohio
Ohio EPA cooperates with government and private agencies, manages some federally funded pollution
control projects, obtains technical and laboratory services, establishes advisory boards, investigates
environmental problems, and disseminates information on environmental programs.  Participants in Ohio EPA's College Intern program assist technical staff with routine duties. They assist in research and review of technical reports, documents and files dealing with Ohio's geology, ground water resources and public water systems. Additionally, they compile information and enter it into a database. They conduct database queries to ensure accuracy of entered data as well as assist the program supervisor as needed.
