So you've done your searching,
narrowed down your decisions, and need to send in all that application
information (which can be a bit overwhelming). Each institution has
different materials that they request from the applicant. This page lists
helpful TIPS in organizing the above materials.
Letters of Recommendation
Request your letters of recommendation EARLY. This point can not be
stressed enough. Faculty and others are very busy and have several other
letters to write for several other students. Give them ample time to write
you a supportive letter.
Assuming
your recommender is Faculty/Staff, most may ask for the following:
stamped envelope with complete mailing address to your internship(s) of
interest, list of courses completed, resume, list of strengths and
weaknesses, reasons for applying, and future goals.
Personal Essay
Be concise in answering the question and have people
proofread your essay.
A few examples of possible essay questions include:
-Write a statement identifying how our program
would contribute to your education and
career goals.
-What specifically attracts you to the Summer Research
Program in Conservation Science
at ......?
-What do you hope to gain from your summer experience?
Resume
Include a cover letter along with your resume (see career services for
examples of both)
Your
resume is often the first impression you'll make on the person reading it,
so make it work for you and pay attention to the following tips from Resume-Writing
Tips, Planning Job Choices: 1999
1. Pay careful attention to spelling,
punctuation, grammar and style
2. Proofread carefully, using a dictionary
and stylebook, and have several other people
proof-read as well
3. Organize information in a logical
fashion
4. Confine your information to one page
5. Use a simple, easy-to-read font
6. Use good-quality white or near-white paper
7. Include as much work experience as possible
8. Tailor your information to the job you're
seeking
9. Seek help at your career services center
